Course Requests and Restrictions

Course Requests

  • The university designates a one-week time period during the prior term to allow entry of enrollment requests for a future term.
  • Student requests are entered via Hokie SPA by each student using the CRN for a specific section.
  • The CRN is a unique five-digit identifier with the first digit representing the numeric code for the term:
    • 9 = Fall
    • 1 = Spring
    • 6 = Summer I
    • 7 = Summer II
  • The online course request will audit Min/Max Rules as well as audit compliance with any section restrictions.
  • Students may alter submitted requests as often as desired during the allowed timeframe.
  • Submission of a course request does not guarantee enrollment in any course.
  • Hours of access: typically 7:30 a.m. to 4 a.m. daily (includes Saturday and Sunday).
  • Helpful Hint: The modem pool is busiest from 6:00 p.m. until Midnight Monday through Thursday.
  • Participation in Course Request is critical to your academic planning as well as providing a key tool to academic departments. Requests entered during the course request process provides course offering departments enrollment demand information used to determine cancellations or increased capacities in courses. After departments have reacted to the results of course request, a batch schedule process attempts to respond to requests entered. The scheduling process attempts to successfully schedule courses requested (Note: alternate sections of a course will be automatically considered if requested section is unavailable). Schedules are processed in the following academic level order: Graduate, Senior, Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman.

Course Restrictions

Students who request courses with RESTRICTIONS--and do not meet the criteria of the restrictions--will be prohibited from entering that CRN.
