Academic Common Market

The Academic Common Market (ACM) is a cooperative tuition-reduction agreement among 10 Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) states.

In cases where no public institution in the student's home state offers a degree program in one of the selected fields of study, the home state has arranged with Virginia (specifically Virginia Tech) through the ACM program for the student to receive a waiver of out-of-state tuition by attending a cooperating public college or university (Virginia Tech) in another participating state (Virginia).

Academic Common Market Programs for Out-of-State Undergraduate Students

  • If you have applied for and been offered admission to Virginia Tech in one of the ACM majors, you should contact your state coordinator, who will assist you in certifying your eligibility to pay in-state tuition rates while you are pursuing an ACM degree.
  • You must be certified by the higher education commission in your home state to be eligible for the in-state tuition rate through the ACM. If your state asks you to provide a letter of verification for the major, please contact the Office of the University Registrar to request a "Certification of Major".
  • If you have not yet been accepted into an ACM major but anticipate future acceptance, please stay in contact with your state coordinator to ensure that major is still in the ACM inventory. Please note that majors are periodically added to and deleted from the inventory.
  • Your approval is made based on being a resident of that state and pursuing one of the listed majors/options (if applicable).
  • All engineering students must complete the General Engineering requirements before acceptance into a specific engineering program. A student may petition to his/her home state coordinator for approval for in-state tuition eligibility upon enrollment into a specific ACM engineering major.
  • Certifications will only be accepted for programs approved for Virginia Tech's ACM inventory.
  • Students must maintain continuous full-time enrollment.
